Welcome to Year 3
We have an exciting year planned for the children in Year 3 and we begin with the topic called ‘Sticks and Stones.’ The children will be learning about the changes in Britain from the Stone Age to the Iron Age. We will be finding out where the people lived, what they ate, the clothes they wore and the animals that existed many thousands of years ago.
Our English lessons focus on stories set in this early historical time including ‘Stone Age Boy’ and the ‘Iron Man.’ The non-fiction book ‘How to Wash a Woolly Mammoth’ will be used to introduce instructional texts – the children will be following instructions to make their own Woolly Mammoth!
Reading continues to be an important focus throughout school. Your child will be heard read in a guided reading session at least once a week; this is in a small group of children with an adult. We encourage the children to read at least three times a week; this can be their reading book, a book at home, a library book or a book from Bug Club. Bug Club is our online reading scheme where books are set in your child’s ‘library’ at the appropriate level for your child to read at home. In class the Bug Club books are used in guided reading sessions.
We are using a mastery approach to maths teaching, so there will be lots of opportunities to use practical resources. Look out for the homework where your child will be teaching you how to use Place-Value grids and Part-Whole models. The children will soon be introduced to ‘Rock Star maths’ to learn their times tables – details to follow about this.
Our Science lessons allow the children to investigate and carry out simple experiments. Our first topic is ‘Rocks and Soils’ where the children will be observing rocks, carrying out tests to find the hardest rock and investigating fossils and soil.
P.E Kits should be kept in school for the half term. All children have PE lesson on Wednesday and some on Thursday. The children who do not have PE have a swimming lesson on Thursday.
Each week the children have a session in the ICT suite, they are learning to log onto School 360 independently and access some of the resources. There are also iPads which the children can access to learn computing skills.
Music is taught be a specialist teacher and this term the children are developing their singing skills, this includes popular songs such as Shotgun by George Ezra.
