Welcome to the summer term in Year 3
We will be finishing our topic ‘It’s all Greek!’ finding out about Greece today, its flag, food and weather. This will be followed by the new topic called ‘Boom, shake the room!’ where we will find out about volcanoes around the world.
The children will be using atlases to locate Greece and the major volcanoes. Using Google Earth we will be able to explore Greece and volcanoes safely! As part of our computing work the children will learn how to make videos and by combining this with ‘Green screen’ we are intending to use our English lessons to prepare non-fiction writing to create a weather forecast and exciting news reports about volcanoes! To further enhance our learning about volcanoes and to remind the children of the three forms of rocks that are formed the children will visit Killhope Mine and Museum.
As a class we will be reading ‘The Abominables’ by Eva Ibbotson, a longer novel set one hundred years ago that features a Yeti in the Himalayas. This will be our introduction to mountains and using Google Earth we will explore the Himalayas and use a child friendly search engine to learn about the Abominable snowman (Yeti)
Reading continues to be important and success in this skill leads to success across the curriculum. This term we will begin a Reading challenge where the children will be encouraged to read three times a week. As a class we have discussed the most popular authors the children read at home and we will be talking about our favourite books and possibly finding some new authors or series of books that Year 3 like. Bug Club continues to be used in class during our Guided Reading sessions and the children are encouraged to read these books at home. If access to a tablet or computer is unavailable there is time given during our reading sessions.
In our maths lessons we continue to use a Mastery approach and children use a variety of practical apparatus to aid their understanding of new concepts. This term we will learn about fractions, weight and length. Throughout the term we will continue to practise our knowledge of column addition, subtraction and multiplication to aid our calculations. Rock Star Maths is proving to be popular and this term we will focus on having a quick recall of the 8 times tables.
Our PE lessons this term are outdoors and continue to be taught by Mr Dowson our PE specialist. P.E Kits should be kept in school for the half term. All children have a swimming lesson on Tuesday morning.
