Hexham First School

Year 2

In the Summer Term Class 2’s topic will be “When a Knight won his spurs.” We will be learning about castles and finding out how and why they were built.  We will discover what life was like in a castle and learn about some of the important people who stayed at local castles.  We will also visit Carlisle castle and make our own castles in class.

In English this term we will be reading Dr Xargle’s book of Earthlets, Meerkat Mail, Ananse and the box of secrets, The Min Pins and a range of books by Julia Donaldson.  We will use the books to support our writing of reports, letters, plays and stories.

Please read with your child as often as you can (ideally at least three times a week). Please record what they have read in their Reading Record. We will also write in it every time we hear them read.

Our spellings this term will focus on high frequency words that we may read or write often in year 2. Spellings will be sent home every Friday and tested on the following Friday.

In Maths we will be learning about

  • Measurements – Mass, Capacity, Temperature and Time,
  • Position and Direction
  • We will also use what we know about addition, subtraction, division and multiplication to help us problem solve and work through maths investigations.

Your child will receive maths homework every Friday, which relates to the work he/she has studied over the week. Please ensure it is handed in by the following Friday.
