Year 2

Welcome to Class 2!

In Class 2 this term our topics are The Great Fire of London and Space. We will learn about events in the Fire of London and why and how it started. We will be finding out ways in which life was different in 1666 and will have a visit for the Fire Brigade to learn about how firefighting has changed.

As part of our Space topic we will learn about the planets and their distance from the Sun. We will find out about Space exploration and imagine that we are going into space.

During this term Class 2 will also celebrate Burn’s Night and Chinese New Year.

In English we will be writing our TRAWL stories. TRAWL stands for Teaching Reading And Writing Links. We will spend several weeks reading traditional tales and looking at techniques used by their authors. Then we will have a go at writing our own. Our TRAWL stories will be bound and parents and carers will be invited to celebrate our work at our TRAWL book launch!
In Maths our class will be working Multiplication and Division, Statistics, Length and height, Properties of Shape and Fractions. We are using a mastery approach to maths teaching, so there will be lots of opportunities to use practical resources and to problem solve. We are going to be great mathematical thinkers!

Reading is very important in Year 2. We will be reading Traditional Tales from around the world and all children will take part in a Guided Reading session and/or a comprehension activity every week. Please read with your child at home at least three times a week. Your support in helping them develop their reading skills will make a huge difference to their learning in class.

Spellings and Maths homework will be given out on a Friday.
Please hand homework in on Thursday.
Spellings will be tested on Friday.
